The Flip Side with Kuthula Matshazi
The opposition groups are undermining themselves and setting bad precedents when they promote bad practices amongst their followers and themselves in order to score points against Zanu PF and President Robert Mugabe.
Over the years, we have noticed a disturbing trend whereby the opposition groups try as much as possible not to censure each other when they commit mistakes fearing that doing so would equate to playing into the hands of Zanu PF. Unfortunately, this practice breeds lawlessness and tramples on the democratic values, the very principles the opposition says is determined to deliver to us. More...

This Week on African Perspective
Focus on Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua's early performance
This Tuesday the 31th of July we discuss Nigerian President, Umaru Yar'Adua's performance since his inception as head of state. We explore his persona and public policy moves. Do his early public policy moves indicate whether he is heading in the right path in consolidating democracy ideals in Nigeria and striving to achieve social justice for ordinary Nigerians?
For instance, what do we make of his milestone public declaration of his personal assets, the reported review of some oil contracts and his handling of the workers' strike in June ?
Listen live on 105.5 FM in Toronto or online on www.chry.fm worldwide as we discuss this issue. To contribute, call our studio number on +1 416 736 5656 or write to africanperspective@chry.fm

Federal opposition parties on Canadian foreign policy and Africa
Minister for International Cooperation Josée Verner not reachable despite attempts
This Tuesday the 24th of July we discuss with immediate past leader of the federal New Democratic Party and current International development critic Alex McDonough and Liberal Party's Canadian International Development Agency critic Mark Eyking on the implications of Canada's foreign policy shift towards the Americas. How will this focus affect Canada's relations with Africa considering that there are criticisms already that Canada is not fully committed to meeting its international development assistance obligations towards Africa? Canada has scaled down its commitment towards development assistance to Africa by about 25 percent. Will Prime Minister Harper's agenda of prioritising relations with the Latin American countries cause further marginalisation of African countries?

Greed delivers command economy
The Flip Side with Kuthula Matshazi
The greed and unscrupulous behaviour by some of our businesspeople has unfortunately brought self inflicted misery unto themsleves and the re-establishment of a command economy.
According to Andy Hodges, the Head of Treasury for the Zimbabwe Allied Banking Group, most businesses have been setting their prices for the goods in the last two months based on "future inflation forecasts". This principle is not new but well recognised in economics. When people perceive that inflation will go up, they will generally tend to behave in a manner that actually pushes the inflation up. They will ask for raises in wages, in prices, etc. Inversely, if they perceive that it will remain low they will likewise engage in behaviour that will keep the inflation low. This principle tends to be a self fulfilling prophecy. No government or policymaker should ignore such a principle in a market economy because by the very nature of the market economy it is intrinsic. The market economy is directed and responds to market forces. More...

This week on African Perspective
This Tuesday the 17th of July we discuss with Prof. Femi Kolapo of University of Guelph about the situation in Darfur. This is a follow up of the discussions held during the weekend at in Toronto at the Wole Soyinka Lecture Series under the theme "Humanitarian Effort on a Global Scale With Regards To Darfur" where Prof. Kolapo presented a paper.
We discuss the role of the African Union and how effective they have been in dealing with the crisis. What has been the role of the international community and what is its role going forward? Should the right to intervene be invoked?

SADC moving towards integration
This Week on African Perspective
This Tuesday the 10th of July we discuss with the Head, Policy and Strategic Planning, Southern African Development Community Secretariat and a member of the Formative Process Research on Integration in Southern Africa (FOPRISA) Steering Committee Professor Angelo Mondlane. Prof. Mondlane discusses the progress SADC is recording in its integration project. We seek to find out whether SADC is on track to meet the target they set to form an integrated economic zone? The Trade Protocol on Trade Cooperation which came into force in 2000 aims to reduce trade barriers among member countries and moving the region toward a free trade area. Participating countries agreed to phase out tariffs on 85 percent of intra-SADC trade by 2008, and sensitive products would be liberalized by 2012.
More interesting, is what would be SADC's position in the envisaged Union Government of the United States of Africa?
