Zimbabwe's Ambassador Takes Issue with 'Arrogant' Editorial

Embassy Newsletter,

LETTERS

Your editorial is unfortunate since it borders on inaccuracies and arrogance (Re: "Failure on the Horizon" March 21). The mere fact that the article was written as an editorial was a trick to avoid writing a comprehensive story that could have brought out compelling facts about the abundantly proven violent nature of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change. In an editorial you can offer your opinion as you wish, which still does not make it fair journalism because, as your editorial shows, you only heard and considered one side of the story. More...

Western powera are slowly but surely being exposed for what they really are. Their agenda has little to do with the welfare of the masses but more to do with exploiting people and their resources for their own benefit. I hope they fail in their attempt to incite the people of Zimbabwe. What we need is an African solution and a sence of responsibility from our leaders be they in power or in the opposition.

I also do not trust the Western power agenda in Zimbabwe or for that matter in Africa. Madam Ambassador this should give the gov't more confidence that the people support Zimbabwe. However, madam Ambassador, most Zimbabweans now accept that criticism is in order and some wrong things have happened in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe does need new leadership. Changes within Zanu-pf is needed. The MDC is unable to articulate issues for the Zimbabwean masses.

The Letter written by the Ambassador of Zimbabwe to Canada in response to an editorial by Embassy makes interesting reading. The opening of the ambassador's letter suggest that the 'prayer meeting' which had been organised by the Save Zimbabwe coalition was a veiled support rally for the MDC. At the near close of her letter she also mentions that Zimbabwe is a product of our blood and tears. Sufficient parallels can be drawn using that information to water down her argument. I take it that during the struggle for Zimbabwe, and because the Smith regime was very repressive, people who organised fighting against oppression organised all soughts of gatherings veiled in different names to keep the agenda on the go. There is no doubt that the ambassador's government in Harare is a repressive regime which is not amenable to plural or diverse views. It is things like the barbaric treatment the opposition has suffered at the hands of Mugabe's government that has led people to behave thus. Mugabe and his men are just hiding behind the democratic elections etc etc to justify their excessive use of force against people who hold opposing views. If the ambassador were to pursuade her boss in Harare to start treating all citizens as the same and engage in meaningful dialogue with all and sundry, I do not think all these foreign press who are taking potshorts on the country would have that opportunity. It is helpless madam ambassador to chant useless slogans like we are not going to be a colony again because I do not beleive there is anyone who is hell bent to sell the nation. Mind you Zanu PF enjoyed sponsorship from multinational companies when it came to power, the money which it used to build its empire of companies. The MDC is a recognised political party under the Political Parties Act in Zimbabwe and have every right like Zanu PF to access the nation through all available media to advance their policies. But they do not have that. Through intimidation of local leaderships Zanu PF has made sure that noone would go to those communities and propergate alternative views to the government. In fact when a strong opposition to Zanu PF was formed this was a golden opportunity for Mugabe and his men to shine by putting accross progressive policies that would defeat the upstarts hands down. However, when the opposition was formed, and because Zanu PF viewed itself as standing on quicksand, it encouraged its veterans to disrupt farming operations and with it all industry. That is the crux of the matter madam ambassador. Now that the majority have lost their jobs and inflation is riding roughshod on all our savings you bleat in the comfort of that embassy there in Canada where you get everything without queueing. Funny isn't it. The day of reckoning is nigh madama ambassador. It is those in the West who know Zimbabwe from the surface who can be easy prey for your public relations effort madam ambassador. Beneath the heart of your heart you know for certain that Zimbabwe is headed for doom and we are our own architects of that doom!

'The Conservative'

"Zimbabwe will never be a colony again" , what a load of hot air !This tired line comes from the days soon after the land occupations. Florence Chideya is reading from a script that serves her political masters in Harare.Perhaps the ambassador should return to Harare if Canadian freedom of speech is too much for her to stomach.

As a matter of fact,if I could have it my way I would shut down the consulate in Ottawa !

Is Robert Mugabe or Zanu PF for that matter empowering the people of Zimbabwe? If so how come we are running away by the thousand to other counties to do menial jobs inspite of our qualifications? How come all the wealth in our country is now in the hands of Mugabe's henchmen? I understand some even have private armies. Who has been empowered so far the masses or the chosen few? Kubvunza kwakanaka.
