WORTH REPEATING
Reflections of President Fidel Castro

MORE THAN three billion people in the world are being condemned to premature death from hunger and thirst.
This is not an exaggeration; this is rather a conservative figure. I have meditated for quite a long time on that after the meeting held by (United States) President George W. Bush with US automakers (carmakers). The sinister idea of turning foodstuffs into fuel was definitely established as the economic strategy of the US foreign policy on Monday, March 26. A wire service issued by the AP, a US information agency with worldwide coverage, literally reads: WASHINGTON (AP), March 26 — President Bush touted the benefits of "flexible fuel" vehicles running on ethanol and bio-diesel in the Monday, meeting with automakers to boost support for his energy plans. Bush said a commitment by the leaders of the domestic auto industry to double their production of flex-fuel vehicles could help motorists shift away from gasoline (petrol) and reduce the nation’s reliance on imported oil. I am in semi agreement with this article but I have to say that we need to be concerned with ethanol as a fuel alternative no matter what is used. For example, say instead of corn farmers are encouraged to use switchgrass. Land used to grow corn currently with be used for switch instead. This will decrease the supply of corn thus increasing the price. Anything that is grown on the land for fuel will have to increase the price of foodstuffs, this is a worrisome trend. Like it or not we are headed for rough times, higher fuel prices are already killing millions of people. How many people will die with oil at $150/barrel?
Now you will hopefully realise why the Western World had measures in place to protect their farmers.
The same lame argument found in Zimbabwe - farmers should plant maize instead of flowers. The type of argument from people who takes almost 3 weeks to count election results - and are still counting....
